I really wish it wasn’t a 3/4 band practice. It’s very frustrating to know the VH band is playing and recording their sessions to review all without the singer.

Based on Dave’s live performances, it seems to have almost always been this way since they got back together, especially in 2012. The band is showing up as tight as they have ever been and Dave is just sorta calling it in. He wasn’t even at most of the sound checks (if any). It seems he only shows up for the “rehearsals” when they rent out a building and invite the media and their friends and family. As long as Eddie keeps kicking ass the way he has been, I could care less. I’d love to hear these instrumentals, though. They sound slammin’!

I agree, and you know Dave is not at another studio or even for that manner is his living room going over the correct lyrics to the songs and how they should be sung. That was the frustrating thing about 2012 when they pulled out these old tunes, ie Hang em High. Dave couldn’t even really remember the words and jotted them down on a piece of paper and taped it to the drum riser. I do believe however that Dave spends a lot of time in front of a mirror practicing his dance moves and jazz hands!

I’m not certain if it’s jazz hands or spirit fingers.

I thought it was normal for a vocalist not to attend sound check (to save the voice for the show).

Depends on the vocalist.

Here we’re seeing both spirit fingers on our left and jazz hand on our right… this just keeps getting more complicated.

The majority do not, especially as they get older.

I guess it depends on how important the singer, or “vocalist” feels the gig might be. He did choose to show up for the Jimmy Kimmel soundcheck and rehearsal. If the world is going to see it, it’s worth showing up to sound check. If it’s just 10-20k people, meh, I’ll figure it out when I get there…or I’ll just mouth some syllables and fake it. We’ll see…at least that’s how it sounded to me.

That’s true but the 3 Van Halen’s aren’t doing a sound check, they are rehearsing. I can understand Dave not doing the sound check 4 hours before they hit the stage but to not be rehearsing songs with the band that you haven’t sang in 20+ years seems ridiculous. Who knows, maybe all 4 of them will meet at another studio in a week or so to go over some of the deep cuts that they want to perform during the show.

I don’t care how they handle rehearsal or soundcheck – as long as they pull it off when I see them onstage, that’s all that matters to me.
