Notes: This was my first time seeing the mighty Van Halen in southern California
and the fifth and final time on this tour and number 25 overall. A few times a year
I travel for work to go to a conference or training, but there’s rarely ever a show
that coincides with my trip. I was fortunate enough that this show just happened to
be on the day my conference ended, so you’re damn right I’m going to go and record it.
Of all the shows I’ve seen on this tour, I think this had the best sound due to the fact
that it’s a completely open-air venue unlike the sheds in the Midwest. Unfortunately, there
is a bit more crowd noise on this than the other recordings, but as usual it always seems
worse in the moment than what the recording reflects. As with the shows in the past
week or so, they dropped “Chinatown” and “In a Simple Rhyme”, but the overall
length of the show is still about the same. I was in section 102 and was on the end of the
row right next to the soundboard. Warren DeMartini from Ratt was in the VIP section
in front of the board, and I flagged him down right after the show and got to say hi and
get a picture. Sweet. I’ll post the Kenny Wayne Shepherd set later. Enjoy!

I wonder what prompted them to drop those two songs for one show. Sounds like this is pretty Ed focused with very little low end. Could possibly be tweaked on the old EQ to make a nice house blend. :)

They weren’t played earlier in the week either. (Phoenix)

OK, so I wonder what drove them to drop these songs from only two shows on the whole tour? Obviously wasn’t a time restriction.

They dropped Simple Rhyme earlier as well.

So where did the time gained by dropping ‘China’ and ‘Simple’ get added into the rest of the set?

Probably more banter by Dave. He did quite a bit of talking in Denver and I think that show was about 10 minutes longer?

I’ve also read somewhere that Dave talked for almost 10 minutes during “Dance The Night Away” in the previous show. Too bad, I think that especially “In A Simple Rhyme” sounded much better than during the first shows of the tour. I wonder if they’ll bring up another deep cut for the final two shows at Hollywood Bowl?

I doubt they will do anything to break the cycle at this point. I’m sure they’re all ready to get the hell away from each other (i.e. Ed and Dave) for another couple years. ;)

Well, how ’bout adding “On Fire” then? An appropriate addition if they really get the hell away from each other…. :)

My guess is they’ll play Chinatown one night in Hollywood and Simple Rhyme the other night. You know to “shake things up.”

Band:
Eddie Van Halen
Wolfgang Van Halen
David Lee Roth
Alex Van Halen

Notes: Fun night from the 8th row (maybe). It was a rowdy bunch with talkers and whistlers. The row before us had a group of guys who my girlfriend called “Little bitches night out at Van Halen”, because these guys acted so stupid and talked the complete show. During “I’ll Wait” two of them turned around to us and started talking about when the keyboard portion should start/or be. By that time, we didn’t care anymore..Recording isn’t the greatest, but has its moments…enjoy.
