Not a big Hagar era fan, so I had to offset the Hagar stuff with some ’78 stuff. Not the best copies or recordings, but they’re fun to listen to and it’s nice to know they’re getting transfered to CD. Thus far I have copied:

July 9th, 1978 Long Beach, CA (Already released: http://www.vhboots.com/09july1978.html)
August 29th, 1978 Philadelphia, PA (http://www.vhboots.com/29august1978.html)
September 23rd, 1978 Anaheim, CA (http://www.vhboots.com/suspiciousperformance.html and http://www.vhboots.com/japantour79lp.html)

Seems like it’s pointless to spend the time dubbing these shows when there are probably better quality copies out there already. I don’t have these other copies, so I have no way of comparing. Both Anaheim shows only show six songs listed, but my cassette has a full show. However, the vhboots.com listings have Jamie’s Crying and I don’t think my tape has that, so do I have the incorrect date on the tape? Ugh…now I remember why I packed all of this stuff up and stored it away. I don’t have the time for this.

There are a couple versions of the Anaheim show.

There is 50 min version and a 35min version that was from a boot LP.

The 35 min version is better quality than the 50min version.

I’m using an old list of my cassettes for the information.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

I pulled a tape and copied it tonight. It’s labeled as 7-15-78 and it’s acually 8-6-78 and I apparently already have a better quality copy backed up. I need to take another approach to this, so I’m not putting lesser quality copies of shows already known to be in circulation.

So you have the full Anaheim show? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in circulation before. It’s usually just copies of the six song “Suspicious Performance” I find online. I have the six songs from that show, but nothing more. And the rest of the list you just mentioned – well – I don’t know about everyone else but you’d be helping at least one person here who doesn’t have those other shows.

But I can understand why you’d be frustrated – there was and continues to be a lot of misinformation about show dates back then.

I’m working on my lists, going through discs and hard drives and trying to make sense of what I have vs. what’s known to be out there, cross referencing everything with vhboots.com. If I start passing around my shows when there are known higher quality recordings out there, I’ll have the die hard traders after me and, in a way, I understand. Now that we don’t have to copy tapes and there are so many low generation and master copies of shows in circulation, it’s best to keep sharing the highest quality versions and phase out these older versions.

My biggest problem is time. Working full time, playing in a band on the weekends and trying to maintain a relationship leaves very little time to sit and copy cassettes, keep up with lists of shows and the quality of those shows, etc. Fortunately audio and video production are part of my day job, so I can work on editing these shows and making CDs throughout my work day, but I think the boss would frown upon me bringing in a few hundred cassettes, cassette decks and sit here capturing shows while I’m on the clock. ;)

lol – mine frowns upon me just being online! No I totally get it – again – there’s no obligations whatsoever. Anything you share would be appreciated, but don’t kill yourself trying to do it, lose your job, cut short important elements in your life – nothing is worth that.

I’m going to chip away at this stuff and try to make sense of it all. Part of me just wants to get everything converted, regardless of the quality and the other part of me feels like it’s a waste of time and money to rip all of these substandard quality copies of the shows when I could simply trade for better quality shows and throw these old tapes away. Either way, until I know what I have and what’s out there, I have no starting place, so I’ll keep chipping away at the archive listings to at least confirm what I actually have.
