VOODOO (2375) | I’ve heard similar versions of this early solo, but I don’t recall ever hearing this particular version. The date seems off from known shows. Can anyone match this one up? Says it captured with a miked monitor, but the title says it’s “Soundboard”. I think this guy has posted a few misidentified videos in the past, too? VOODOOQuote |

That’s from the Magic Mountain show that is misidentified as October of 1977. It’s actually from July or August of ’77. It definitely falls between the June Whisky boot and the October Civic boot. Here’s Ron’s link for the boot: “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

VOODOO (2375) | Cool. I have that boot. I had a feeling it was misidentified. This guy posted some supposed 1984 outtakes that weren’t legit before too. VOODOOQuote |

I haven’t heard the 6/10/77 show for a while, but according to history that would be the last show we’ve heard without tapping. If the magic mt show is indeed in July, that would be when he was working out his tapping technique, August is probably too late. But knowing Edward, after he got home from the zep show he tried it right away, and started with the technique immediately. I might even go as far to say that the magic Mt show is actually in may, or early June. I could even be possible that this is one of those European/American date problems. Maybe this guy is correct and the show was on march 12, 1977 ???? drjazzQuote |

It looks like the uploader of the video is Dutch or Belgian so would probably list the date of March 12th as 12/3/77 (or 76 in this case) so I think you are probably right. Chris UKQuote |

Either way, it’s still not the right date. Magic Mountain definitely followed the 6/10/77 Whisky show. Why? One reason is that Atomic Punk is much more developed. In fact, AP is close to how it was recorded on the album at MM, whereas it’s in its embryonic state at the Whisky. “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

Ed tapped in his solo on 6/10/77 at the Whisky. He did not at Magic Mountain. Ed said he got the idea from Jimmy Page in ’71 or ’72. Harvey Mandel might have something to say about that… The March date is not right for many reasons, Atomic Punk being just one. “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

drjazz (71) | Sounds logical. However, Where did ed say it was 71 or 72? Seems that he would’ve started tapping earlier. The dates seem too close with the forum show in 77 to when he began tapping. Is the 6/10 date in stone? It seems that time and time again these dates are all wrong. Almost half of the club show dates have changed through the years. drjazzQuote |

Ed stated ’71/’72 in the guitar magazine articles where the quote comes from. The idea is that he worked on the technique for a while before using it live. The earliest known evidence we have of him tapping is 6/10/77; but that doesn’t mean it was the first time he did it live. It’s the only recorded evidence we have. Either way, the Jimmy Page part of the story is also in question. IMHO, I believe Ed got the idea for the right hand capo behind the left hand trill he used in Unchained and Can’t Get Away From You from Jimmy. Whether that was in 1971-72 is debatable. The 6/10 date works because it was a Friday night (see Young and Wild) and they played songs that were not on the WB demo – discounting the Jan and Feb dates. That being said, 5/27 also works, but it’s not that much earlier. Even though it’s not complete, see: Club Days (1974-1977) “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

You’re Warner bros demos statements are logical, but there’s no way for sure that we would know when atomic punk was first played. There are many demo songs played on the 6/10 show, which also suggests that the show might even be 10/6, unlikely because it was a Thursday, but past midnight is indeed Friday. Anyway you slice it, the tapping started very near that zep tour, which backs up eddies story. drjazzQuote |

wjamflan (1113) | With all due respect Doc, we’ve discussed these things before. First, our first evidence of tapping (audio boot) is in June ’77. Second, tune development – boot to boot -is a reliable indicator of where things fit, especially Eruption. That being said, there are many reasons that the Magic Mountain show had to come after the 6/10 Whisky show. I just don’t have time to outline all of them. Unfortunately, a search may not help you b/c of the transfer of ownership and loss of older threads. Maybe someone else with knowledge and time could chime in. Good luck. BTW, I love the Jelly Roll tune your name is derived from (if that’s where you got it). “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

thismusicsux (581) | 1977 Magic Mountain show was pinned more accurately to Aug 15, 1977. Girl who took this photo dated it that at least. Found it this year (how ’bout that guitar DLR thismusicsuxQuote |
