I fiddled with the audio some more, and added markers to the project for the tracks. Next up will be a test render so I can check it out on the living room TV.

Here are two videos I rendered out of the project. The first one is Top Of The World, and the reason I rendered this out was because I’m concerned that the video quality isn’t any better than the AppleJack version. Possibly the S-VHS tape was just too old.

The second video is of JUMP, and I rendered it out so you could see the mashup I created from the two edits that existed. I’m curious to see if you think the cuts are too frequent and make the video hard to watch.

Cross fades are a matter of personal taste, and I used to use long cross fades like the ones you have in your Jump video. However, over the last five years or so, I have dramatically decreased the length of the cross fades I use (usually I go with 5 frame fades these days); and more and more, I am increasing the number of scene changes in a DVD project where I don’t use a cross fade. If you watch a modern, professional concert video, you won’t see many (if any) cross fades; and of those that you see, there will be very, very few long fades. Of course, with these amateur videos that we create, the idea isn’t necessarily to try and emulate what the pros are doing. Rather you should do what appeals to you. Someone pointed out to me before I started to shorten the cross fades, that the ones I was using were too long in his opinion, and he recommended I try doing a show with shorter fades. I was VERY uncomfortable with changing my editing style. However, once I started shortening the cross fades, I became more and more comfortable with it, and I really surprised myself because I quickly caught on to the look of the shorter fades and I would never go back to the longer fades now.

So … to make a short story even longer … I recommend you consider shortening your cross fades.

Thanks for your opinion. So, I went back and looked at portions of Jump to see if I could tell which cuts were mine, and which were in the original video that I didn’t change, and sure enough, I can see the cuts that are slower. I hadn’t either noticed it, or gave it much thought before. I’ll have to revisit that.

In the mean time, I rendered the whole project out to MPEG2 (for dvd authoring) with separate LPCM audio… but now am unsure if I wanna just combine those somehow into a MKV package for viewing on my big TV, or create VOB (dvd) files for viewing. I know I can view MKVs on the TV just fine, just not sure what tool I need, to take what I’ve got and put it into an MKV package. Or maybe there was a better way to render it out of Vegas that would give me the same DVD-like results, but more easily usable for previewing.

Ron, I enjoyed the Jump rendering. The cross fades seemed fine to me. As long as it is not drastically different from the rest of the show I’m sure it will be fine. Keep up the great work!

Looks great Ron. I liked Jump too. Also curious about Pete’s question too. But I liked how jump looked personally. And again thanks for your hard work on this. I can’t wait!!!!!

I think they blend extremely well. I don’t think anyone will feel they are out of place.

The cuts I made to blend the two videos together for JUMP have been cleaned up (shortened), so it should match the rest of the concert better. I also eliminated or changed two or three cuts where the longer cross-fade was hiding things.
