Notes:
Here we have a totally unheard, uncirculated soundboard recording of Van Halen during their Diver Down tour (Hide Your Sheep tour) in 1982. This is the first of three consecutive nights Van Halen played at the Worcester Centrum in 1982. It appears that not even an audience recording of these Worcester shows have circulated previously.
Only two other soundboard recordings from their 1982 tour have ever circulated: a quite muffled-sounding tape source of the first Dallas show, and the audio from the Largo proshot house feed.
The first side of the 90 minute master tape runs out during Everybody Wants Some, but is flipped in time to capture Dave’s banter and storytime that followed. On the second side, the tape was deliberately stopped again following Dave’s acoustic guitar and singing bit, so we’re missing Ice Cream Man and Intruder, but the tape is started again right as Pretty Woman starts. The tape was likely stopped right here to be able to capture more of the end of the show. Still, the second side of the 90 minute master tape ends right before the band would’ve done the Happy Trails a cappella and the reprise of You Really Got Me.
This is essentially the raw transfer, since I overall prefer doing as little editing as possible. Besides, I am not the right person to be doing any sort of worthwhile mastering work. The manual azimuth adjustment was done by briefly listening to the tape playing into a mono feed, with stereo headphones.
Enjoy the music and be grateful we are able hear these special recordings. If you have uncirculated tapes, please consider sharing them before they end up forever lost to time.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

Wow is right Ron…

I saw this at work today on my lunch break and almost crapped my pants!! WTF has this been all these years?!!

Damn this is freakin gold!!!

This is probably the BEST Diver Down show out there compared to ALL OF THEM!! Even has bass and drums… damn. Plus Ed played the Kramer Ad Frank during this show
cause he had the wrist brace on cause he punched the wall a few days earlier.

Sweet,

Rob

Does anyone have a flac version of the Worcester 1982 audience recording?

I think it’s 10/25/82?

If a lossless version can’t be found, I have a cassette of this that could be transferred.

I have this one on CD, but CDs are not in great shape. I unfortunately didn’t save the flac files for this one. Anyone have it?

Notes:
This is finally the upgrade I’ve wanted. Complete and low-gen. No tape
hiss, so this is about as good a copy as you’ll find. The master itself
just wasn’t a very good recording. Sounds like it was recorded in
perhaps the back of the arena. Anyway, this a superior copy of this
show compared to what’s circulating.

The Centrum, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA 22nd October 1982 STEREO SBD

★The first ever soundboard! ! !

Super shock! A completely unreleased soundboard album from the “DIVER DOWN” era has been unexpectedly unearthed! Two press 2CDs will be released simultaneously to permanently preserve the transcendent sound that collectors around the world are currently shaking with!
This work is the first part of a two-part release. It is a stereo soundboard recording of the “October 22, 1982 Worcester performance”. Speaking of the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour”, it is also the largest professional shot production area of the original VAN HALEN, but this new excavation is completely different from them. In order to confirm the situation around that, let’s first take a bird’s-eye view of the activities at that time.

●1982
“DIVER DOWN” released on April 14th
・July 14th – August 21st: North America #1 (26 performances)
・September 1st – 25th: North America #2 (17 performances)
・October 7th – December 11th: North America #3 (38 performances) ←★Here★
●1983
・January 16th – February 12th: South America (15 performances) ←※CARACAS 1983 etc.
・May 29th: US Festival appearance

This is the whole picture of the “DIVER DOWN” era. There are several professional shots, but they are mainly concentrated on “US FESTIVAL ’83″ and the “South America” leg. The Worcester performance of this work is the 9th performance of “North America #3″, which is different from them. It was also 10 days (4 performances) after the standard professional shot “LARGO 1982″.
This show has not even been known to have audience recordings until now, but what was unearthed this time was a sudden super-thick sound board. Although it is called a sound board in a word, there are many different types, from FM broadcast air checks to leaked masters by related parties, but this work is the latter. Although the details have not been revealed, it seems to be a leaked sound board recorded directly from the mix desk. It was also directly digitized from the original master cassette recorded at the show site. Above
all, the person who made it public testified that it was the original master, but the outrageous sound quality itself confirms its origin. Anyway, the core is extremely thick and exposed directly. If you listen to it with headphones, the loud cheers are recorded like ripples far away, but the performance sounds and vocals that kill it instantly have no spatial elements. The super-thick vivid sound that is completely unrelated to the sound and the resonance is engraved in your brain.
The mix for the on-site PA is too raw, and the rough mix lacks the dignity of a work of art. But that’s good. The sense of synchronization between the raging original VAN HALEN and the whole body is completely in sync, which is a whole different league from the pro shots such as “LARGO 1982″. This work will be loved as an official live album of the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour”, but it is also a pleasure board that cannot be enjoyed with the official product.
On the other hand, it was not perfect because it was recorded. The person who recorded it on site seemed to be concerned about the remaining amount of tape, and paused several times at the end of the show. A complete recording of the full show was not realized. Let’s organize the set contents here as well.

● Diver Down (7 songs)
・The Full Bug/Little Guitars/Where Have All The Good Times Gone!/Hang ‘Em High/Cathedral/Secrets/(Oh) Pretty Woman(★*)
● Others (9 songs)
・Fuse of Fire: Runnin’ With The Devil/Jamie’s Cryin’/Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love/You Really Got Me(*)
・Legendary Bomber: Dance The Night Away/Somebody Get Me A Doctor
・Others: Romeo Delight/Unchained/Everybody Wants Some!!(*)
※Note: The “*” marks songs with pauses and missing recordings. The “★” marks songs that cannot be heard on the sister album “WORCESTER 1982 3RD NIGHT: SOUNDBOARD (Zodiac 701)” released at the same time.

…And so on. There are three songs with missing recordings, “Everybody Wants Some!!” is paused in the first half, but restarted with Dave’s MC, and the highlights of the song are well recorded. “(Oh) Pretty Woman” has a cut at the beginning and “You Really Got Me” has a cut at the end.
Finally, we talked about the incomplete parts, but even if we subtract that, it’s about 94 minutes. This high-class sound board experience is truly another dimension. I cited the pro shots from the situation of the “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour”, but it’s a completely different world from such a blurred sound. A transcendent sound board 2 series that appeared across 42 years of time and space. Please enjoy the shock with the press 2CD that will forever speak of the impact!

★ Stereo sound board recording of “October 22, 1982 Worcester performance (first day)”. Digitalized from the original cassette recorded directly from the on-site mix desk on the first public sound board that was astonished all over the world. It is the most faithful record to the “sound” emitted from the hands and throat of the original VAN HALEN. The vividness is overwhelming, and the sense of synchronization where the whole body and the ensemble match perfectly is a pleasure of another dimension. It is a shocking new masterpiece that you can also enjoy “(Oh) Pretty Woman” that is not in the sister work “3RD NIGHT (Zodiac 701)”.

★It will be released with a numbered sticker.
