ron (11783) | We all know Van Halen rules, but have you ever wondered what their albums might have sounded like if they were able to record a few of them during their club days? While we’ll never know the answer to that question, I’ve attempted to do the next best thing and compiled a series of fantasy releases covering the group’s formative years. These albums will hopefully serve as both a road map for the casual fan who’d like to learn more about the group’s history, as well as a scholarly resource for the VH die-hard, covering the most notable of their early, unreleased recordings in the best available quality. Van Halen – Vanhalen (Feb. 1976) TRACK LISTING: 01. Woman in Love – 0:00 To kick things off here’s the first album, which I’ve titled ‘Vanhalen’. This release covers the period from Fall of 1973 when Mark Stone was still on bass, to their January 1976 Hound Dog Studios session. Here we can see that the group has already developed serious chops and killer songs, even in their nascent state. ronQuote |

ron (11783) | Van Halen – Eyes of the Night (Dec. 1976) TRACK LISTING: 01. Runnin’ with the Devil [version 1] – 0:00 This is the second of the studio albums, titled ‘Eyes of the Night’. This release includes songs from the November ’76 Gene Simmons ‘Zero’ sessions, as well as a few live versions of songs that had yet to be recorded in the studio during this time period. It’s during this brief era that Van Halen went from being a dynamite club band to one of the greatest hard rock acts of all time. The songwriting and playing here have to be heard to be believed. ronQuote |

ron (11783) | Van Halen – Light in the Sky (Apr. 1977) TRACK LISTING: 01. You Really Got Me [version 1] – 0:00 This is the third studio album, which I’ve titled ‘Light in the Sky’ after the amazing unreleased song of the same name. These tracks are all taken from the February, 1977 Sunset Sound Recorders demo sessions, and show Van Halen in an upbeat, party-hearty mood due to the increased creative presence of vocalist David Lee Roth. ronQuote |

ron (11783) | Van Halen 1977: Official Live Bootleg – disc 1 of 2 TRACK LISTING (DISC ONE): 01. On Fire – 0:00 We all know Van Halen rules, but have you ever wondered what their albums might have sounded like if they were able to record a few of them during their club days? While we’ll never know the answer to that question, I’ve attempted to do the next best thing by compiling a series of fantasy releases covering the group’s formative years. ‘Van Halen 1977: Live Bootleg’ compiles unreleased live takes of songs not found on ‘Van Halen Live’, and was recorded in Southern California between June and December, 1977. (You can find Van Halen Live on my channel as well.) As some of these songs postdate the group’s first album, you’ll get an idea of what Van Halen II might have sounded like before the group decided to go back to the well for material for that record. Van Halen 1977: Official Live Bootleg – disc 2 of 2 TRACK LISTING (DISC TWO): 01. Little Dreamer – 0:00 ronQuote |
