I’ve realized that I don’t want to take any enemies to my grave,” says Red Rocker

By Andy Greene March 25, 2016

Sammy Hagar hasn’t spoken to Eddie Van Halen face-to-face in 12 years, but he’s willing to change that. Edward Balusek/Getty
Earlier this month, Sammy Hagar bumped into Metallica frontman James Hetfield. “The first thing he said was, ‘Is it true?” says Hagar. “I said, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘That you guys [in Van Halen] are getting back together.’ I said, ‘News to me. I’m not one that goes around hush hush. I’ll tell you whatever I know.’ He goes, ‘You’re kidding.’ I told him, ‘I’m telling you straight up, James. I don’t have a clue.’”

Hetfield had apparently picked up on the same Van Halen rumors that have been flying around the Internet for months, namely that David Lee Roth has once again left Van Halen and the group is ready to reunite with Sammy Hagar. The rumors appear to be based on very little other than David Lee Roth agreeing to play a few songs with his Eat ‘Em and Smile solo band late least year, an unusually frank Eddie interview where he admitted he has virtually no offstage relationship with Roth, a brief Twitter exchange between Eddie and Hagar and a general sense that last summer’s Van Halen tour was a bumpy ride. But Hagar and Michael Anthony have dates with a reunited Chickenfoot this year and are touring with The Circle, and they’ve had no offline communication with Eddie Van Halen since the 2004 reunion tour wrapped.

All that said, Hagar – who ripped into Eddie Van Halen last year in a profanity-laden web video when he insulted Michael Anthony’s bass playing in a Billboard interview – says he had an epiphany shortly before New Year’s regarding the situation. “I realized that I didn’t want to take any enemies to my grave,” he says. “If I K.O. tomorrow, I don’t want to have an enemy. I don’t know how the afterlife works, but I’d just as soon not go there with any enemies.”

The back-to-back deaths of David Bowie and Glenn Frey in the new year only made him feel stronger about it. “I’ve never seen so many guys from my era K.O. like that,” he says. “Bowie was my hero. It was one after the other, even a young guy like Scott Weiland. He inducted me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You just go, ‘Aw, man!’”

About a week after Glenn Frey died, Eddie Van Halen turned 61. Hagar’s webmaster asked him if he wanted to post a photo of the two of them together to mark the occasion. “I said, ‘No, I’ll do it,’” says Hagar. “I put it on my Twitter and said, ‘Happy Birthday Eddie – hope you’re doing good.’ I thought, ‘Aw, fuck. Life is too short.’” Much to his surprise, Eddie (or whoever runs his social media accounts) wrote back, “Thanks Sammy. Hope you’re well too.’” Says Hagar: “That was trippy.”

The exchange only added to rumors of a Van Hagar resurgence, but the singer says he will not be the first one to reach out. “It would be misinterpreted,” he says. “I know the way those guys think. ‘Oh, he wants something! He wants back in the band. He must be broke.’ I’m sorry, but unless they’ve changed drastically, which when I’ve talked to people that do know them it sounds like they haven’t changed at all, it would be misinterpreted. I also don’t want to provoke that. That’s not what I’m looking for in my life now.’”

But if they did reach out, Hagar says he’d be quite amenable to a get-together. “I’d say, ‘Fuck yeah, let’s get some coffee,’” he says. “If I did it myself I’d be way too vulnerable. I’d be in a room with the guys like, ‘No, no. You don’t understand. That’s not what I’m talking about. I just want to be friends. And once we’re friends, we can do anything. Until that is proven, I can’t be in a band with you guys, or whatever.’”

In the unlikely event the Van Halen brothers do want to reunite with Hagar, he says he’d never even consider it if they didn’t also bring back original bassist Michael Anthony. “There’s no scenario I’d do it without Mikey,” he says. “Absolutely not. I would do a solo album with Ed. We can call it the Sam and Ed Show or the Ed and Sam Show. But there’s no such thing as a Van Halen reunion without Mikey. I think they just proved that.”

For now, Hagar is focused on his upcoming work with the Circle and Chickenfoot. “The [Van Halen] rumors are going to be out there, but what else could the rumors be?” he says.”If Dave did leave again, do the math. The last time there was about three people they could have called. In this case, there is only one. But I’m not waiting by the phone.”

I gotta call bullshit on this one.

Everyone knows that Sammy has make tens of millions of dollars selling booze and running Cabo, so for him to suggest that the Van Halens would interpret Sammy reaching out to them as a cry for money because he’s broke is ridiculous. Secondly, the biggest problem all along was Ed’s drinking. But he stopped drinking years ago, i.e., he made a very drastic change. And Sammy knows that Ed has cleaned up his act – so saying, “Unless they’ve changed drastically…” is just more bullshit.

This has nothing to do with money or someone not changing his ways – it’s a simple case of silly human pride getting in the way of someone making the first move (something that could be said for both sides).

In an article about Sammy supposedly not wanting to be on bad terms with Eddie, he still manages to insult him, Alex, and the last VH tour. I love Sammy-era VH, but his interviews in recent years have left me not caring about him at all.

I took what Sammy said as he believes they haven’t changed in regards to their character. It seems to be the brothers are very guarded, and rightly so. There have been numerous instances of people taking advantage of Van Halen over the years. By Sammy making the first approach, he believes they would misconstrue that as he wanting something from them. I agree that it really comes down to human pride on all sides. If one wants to make amends, then by all means do it. I’m sure they all have each others number, or at least able to find out how to contact each other. Be up front and communicate.

I took Sammy’s comments as more of a business type remark.
May be with Dave being a hired singer for VH may be….

Who knows…at this point, anything would be possible :-) If Sammy comes back, well, I would be more than happy to go see Van Halen :-)

I would like to see them make amends…..no tour, no rumors, just bury the hatchet and see if they can co-exist. Like Sammy said, just get a cup of coffee and see where it goes from there. If anything comes from that (years from now) I would be OK with that.

Without starting another thread saw this at links….

According to George Lopez who was on stern today, Eddie is loosing his hearing so maybe that’s a reason we can’t get new music or what not.

Nah, you don’t need concert volume for studio work. I do question Ed’s ears, the mix on ADKOT is like mud at low volume.

Resident dickhead. I will hurt your delicate feelings.
