Sammy Hagar & Ace Frehley party in Appleton

Posted by nsemrad on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 · Leave a Comment

The Red Rocker supported by legendary guitarist Ace Frehley rocked through Greenville, Wisconsin right outside of the Fox valley city, Appleton, Wisc. over the weekend. Drawing a rather impressive crowd into a less populous area brought about a party atmosphere that Sammy Hagar is known to bank off of while creating a truly unforgettable live music experience.

Opening for the Red Rocker was former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. Backed by a ton of solo career hits and KISS classics, Frehley shredded with legendary talent for 90 minutes into the night. There’s no mistaking his voice and guitar style for what fans heard in the early KISS days. Although it’s nothing extremely apparent, remnants of his previous endeavors were continuously interjected into his show in Greenville.

Tearing up his signature Gibson Les Paul, Frehley’s constant chunky riffed songs were a real treat on top of his singing, which was surprisingly very good.

Aside from the KISS classics, during which the crowd went wild, “New York Groove” was the apparent hit of the night during Ace’s set. A song recorded by Ace way back in 1978 best known from a slew of commercials and motion pictures could be identified by even the youngest in attendance. Ace even had Greenville chanting “back in the Greenville groove!”

Taking a short break from vocals, Ace Frehley handed the mic over to his New York guitarist who sang “Flaming Youth” as Ace shredded in the background.

Ace Frehley was a great opening choice for Sammy Hagar and easily fueled fans excitement leading up to the Red Rocker’s late night performance.

With Sammy Hagar and the Wabos you get a little bit of everything. There are Sammy’s own hits, Van Halen, Montrose, and some newer tunes that have slowly crept into his set list.

“We’re throwin a party in Appleton, Wisc.!” Sammy Hagar and the Wabos were all smiles for the surprisingly large crowd gathered on the far edge of Appleton, Wisc. “This beer is good, but it’s just not doing the trick…would someone go to my dressing room and get me somethin’ stronger?!” A very charismatic and energetic Sammy Hagar performed hit after hit on through the night and with the assistance of the awesome crowd, he put on a show to remember.

Tons of memorabilia was tossed on the stage throughout the show. From old records to Sammy Hagar’s book “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock” there was no shortage of Sammy gear and love throughout the crowd. Even a few home made sheets were thrown up there; one reading “Sammy for President!”

Though, the most notable item tossed up was a University of Wisconsin-Madison athletic shirt that Sammy wore through most of the night because, well you guessed it, it was red! Obviously something that pleased the Red Rocker.

From a remixed version of “Right Now” to the edgy lead guitar part of “Top of the World” Sammy brought fans back to the days of Van Halen, but he didn’t forget his own hits like “Three Lock Box,” “Heavy Metal,” and of course “I Can’t Drive 55.”

With every song performed amazingly well, backed by a very talented band that Sammy has been with for quite a while now, the night was easily one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Sammy Hagar has something that just makes every other show seem like it’s missing something. His energy, friendliness, and unmistakable vocals just make the show an awesome time. He is a true entertainer that keeps me coming back for more and more.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?
