Those back shots are the reason I was thinking there is a chance this is from video. You have full, center stage cover shots, individual band member shots from the front, back and stage left and right. I also find it hard to imagine that they would have a multicam shot show from their first world tour on film, but then again, who knows?! I’m not saying I’m an expert or anything, but I work in video editing and many of you here have done editing as well. Most of you have old 8mm footage as well and if you play it on your DVD player and pause it, it looks a lot like these pictures. Film frames and old film photos usually have a lot of different characteristics. Again, I’m not saying I’m positive of anything. All I’m saying is, based on these pictures alone without knowing anything about the show, the person/people who took them, the type of equipment used, the venue, etc…I’m only saying these look like they COULD be from a film transfer. I tried to find the old Pacific Titles Archives scans I had to see if they had anything specifically from London ’78 listed. I do remember there being a lot of generic film footage listed in those archives being around 45 minutes to an hour in length. So, it’s all speculation at this point. I find it a stretch, but still a possibility. :)

Gilligan: I’m no photo expert, but they look like old photographs to me.If they were taken from film I’d think whoever did it would have used better “shots”?There are a lot of “back of the head” shots you wouldn’t normally take on purpose.

But don’t let that stop anyone from looking!

EDDIE’S fingers aren’t fingers they are muscle-powered pistons that hammer guitar strings to the fretboard with the force of a rivet gun”.

It could have been that they were filming Sabbath and Shot some of the Van Halen show to get there setup dialed in,and that was all that they had. Need to look for Sabbath Footage from that tour and there might be some b-roll of Van Halen lying around with it! WOW talk about the holy grail????

Nice shots Bill, in that second pic it looks like Ed’s got a tremolo head on top of old basket weaves!!! wonder if it was these cabs he stripped back?

Thanks Nick. They’re from old flyers. I cropped them, blew them up and fixed up the third one the best I could.

As far as what amp is visible in the second pic, I’m not sure it’s a Super Tremolo b/c I don’t see the speed and intensity knobs. In other words, I can barely see 6 knobs that would probably make it a normal Super Lead. Maybe even this one he still used in ’78:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Super Tremolo in his backline anywhere, but I could just be forgetting.

BTW – those very well could be cabs that he later stripped….

I’ve always loved those 3/31/79 Logan, Utah pics that were linked to awhile ago here with the story of the person who went. Just in case they were missed:

This one is interesting… There are a lot of times that I could swear Eddie was using more than just the bridge PU live… seeing the middle slot loaded makes me wonder if maybe he had a secret switch that would turn on the middle/neck positions. You can especially hear this on the 83 SA pro-shot videos… the tone is a little too sweet to be just the bridge, IMO..

There’s been ALOT of speculation about that over the years.
