EDDIE’S fingers aren’t fingers they are muscle-powered pistons that hammer guitar strings to the fretboard with the force of a rivet gun”.

Thought I’d try to revive this thread. This one is from Greg…

I’ve never been convinced the above photo is EVH. What do others think?

His hair looks a little short for 1977, but it could be from an earlier time.

I don’t think that Eddie… the pic is pretty heavily photoshopped in the background to remove things behind/around the guy playing.. I don’t recall Ed ever using a rosewood neck in the early days on the Franky either. Definitely not in 1977.

Defo that’s Ed alright :)
This is a really important pic in the guitar timeline. It looks like the first use of the boogie body in it’s raw wood state and Ed’s slapped the strat neck on for the gig? perhaps the neck build was a bit more challenging so Ed stuck with the rosewood fender a bit longer? Although it’s quoted that he bought the neck and body at the same time doesn’t necessarily mean he built franky in one hit? if he did fret the neck himself chances are he bollocks it up, it takes practice to do.

Here’s the Jenny Lens pic which is about the same time, I’ve made refs to the similarities.

I think Nick is spot on. I thought both the mouth and the nose looked like Ed’s. Also, that’s definitely Ed’s hand-cut black pickguard that ends up on Franky. The missing chink of plastic below the knobs is a dead giveaway. The bare wood body makes this the only pic of it’s kind. That’s why I got so excited when I saw it.
My questions would be:
1. Did Jenny Lens take this on 5/29/77 as well?
2. Was it taken on a different night? Same night as the pic below perhaps?

3. Did inertia graphics just add the text to one of Jennys pics?
4. If not, are there more pictures of this guitar taken by someone else that have been floating around since 2001?
5. Most important: Is that definitely Franky?
Ed has said in interviews that he built Franky in ’76, painting the body right after getting it. This picture calls that into question big time. The shirt seems to make it plausible that it could be 5/29/77. I just thought it was fascinating when I came across it b/c I love trying to piece all of the early history together. I didn’t know if other gearheads would pick up on it here or not. Either way, I knew it was a rare pic that I’d never seen before.

Well done! It looks like this could be the Franky in its initial stages! How cool is that??

Could/did anyone send a message to Jenny Lens and see if there was any notes or supporting information with the photo? Perhaps there was a log of dates and locations kept.

Looks more like Jeff Beck.

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

Wow. Those Mississippi Jam pictures are phenomenal. Fantastic photography.

I hadn’t seen that other ’77 picture before either. I looked at the fingers and arms to compare with this other Jenny Lens picture that was recently put up on Fan Halen’s FB page.

* Forgive me- I seem to be having difficulty posting the picture from Photobucket. I’m assuming it is because I’m currently using my phone. Hopefully, the link works. *
