Hi guys,

I’ve been around this place since about 1997 8-O and as part of my day job as a writer and a historian have started a Van Halen blog dedicated to the band’s early days, which is located here: http://vanhalenrising.tumblr.com/.

Some of you also know that for the past five years I’ve been working on a comprehensive narrative history of VH’s beginnings through the end of 1978, which is in progress at this moment. This blog will serve as the web-home for the book once it hits booksellers, which should happen within the next two years.

So stop by when you get chance and if you’re on Tumblr or Twitter, follow me. I will follow you back!

Cheers.

If the book will be anything like what you have written on the blog I will not be buying it

Seriously, the project looks very promising and I look forward to buying the finished product.

Looking good, Mr. Ffoner!! The roots of VH are most fascinating to me, as I’ve read/heard all the rest so many times since 1978. Mostly, i just love the MUSIC + my memories are rich.

The rare pix + video from The Strip are such great illustrations and make your blog unique, give it context/depth. I thought I had seen it all. Truly intelligent and well-written, too (though, I’d expect nothing less from you).

We all look forward to more, ffoner. Thanks for sharing your work-in-progress with us.

Wow, I’m really looking forward to this! The picture of Alex is great. That is the one thing missing with Van Halen, a really good retrospective. Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks Gents!
The book will cover the period from the late 60s through the end of 1978 when the band had broken through. I’ve had the good fortune to speak to over 200 men and women who saw the band in the early days, and I’ve also gotten to interview a number of band insiders – names you’d all recognize.
Here’s a bit of a sample, albeit shortened a bit for the web, regarding Gazzarri’s and the jump to the Starwood:

Enjoy and feel free to comment using FB or what have you. If there are topics you’d like to see discussed, ask me and i’ll work on putting up an entry on that topic.

And please spread the word about the blog to other fans. I decided to take on this project because I think we all crave stories about the band’s early days and got tired of reading vague descriptions of backyard parties and gigs at the Whisky. The truth is only better than the legends, by the way, because there’s a lot more detail in the truth.
