It was done to force people to buy physical copies.
When ADKOT came out, expectations at Interscope were very high, and they had too many copies of the CD printed.
So, a decade later, the bean counters told the higher-ups to move them out of the warehouse(s). Instead of running them through a shredder (which would cost $$), they pulled the digital copies offline, and hope to sell off the extras that way. Seriously though, there are several theories, but they are all speculation. Us fans have no idea (that I know of).
