I was going through old Guitar World magazines the other day and remembered this contest.
How cool would have this been to win and have Ed give it to you?
Wonder where it is today?

Actually there was a contest to win a chance to play any instrument of your choice on stage with Van Halen around 88. That would be 2nd runner up to lost weekend in my book.

The contest I remember was back In 1984 In Guitar World. I wanted to win that so bad! As far as I can remember the guy that won the guitar still has It.

Like you said at links Rob I think there are photos and a story on the guy who one the comp in 85 in a Inside magazine.
It would be awesome coming from Ed but I would prefer one of his used ones rather than a fresh new one.Thats why I think the relic ones look so good worn in.
Also in the Inside mag there was a comp two girls won to spend a day at 5150 around the OU812 release I think.
Might have to dig those inside mags out this weekend.

I was able to see one of these at Portland music years back. Some guy traded it for a keyboard. 8-O

I was at NY Monsters of Rock show in 1988. Best show of my life (except I had to sit through Kingdom Cum… the opener). I was scrunched up on the floor next to a subwoofer cabinet the whole time. My bones shook, but it was cool. I remember signing up to win that guitar too! Of course, didn’t get it – probably went to some hot chick that can’t play (the guitar) :-D

Thanks for this never seen the video before.
Great hearing different stories on various competitions.
I will scan the INSIDE article on the 85 give away when I get a chance.

I know Rob and Dutchie have got great 5150 Kramer’s , I got mine last week and I am very happy with the relic job on it.
I have loved this guitar since I heard 5150 and watched LWAN when I was 16.
Now just got to get better at playing it…Still even looks awesome on display.
