Happy 100th Birthday, Mother Van Halen!

Taped from Floor SEC 5 Row D

Van Halen returned to Austin,Texas with original frontman David Lee Roth, for the first time in over 31 years on September 21, 2015.
This time, the band performed at the massive Formula One Circuit of The Americas – Austin 360 Amphitheater.

Ticket prices for the Van Halen show were obscenely high.
$167 per general floor or lower level seat and up to $750 per VIP seat!!
How much money does Irving Azoff need?!?!

I lucked out in early July and was able to pick up two 4th row floor seats for $215 on eBay.
While these seats were to the far left of the floor, I couldn’t complain, considering I spent $200 PER VH seat in 2008 and 2012!
Now don’t get me wrong, my friend Tim and I attempted to upgrade our positions by “seat hopping” during the intermission.
However, a grumpy old man in our row reported us and we were required to show our tickets to venue security to prevent from being ejected.
BUSTED!! A few minutes before Van Halen took the stage, the amphitheater was completely packed and there were no unclaimed seats to be had.

Tim and I made the best of the situation. On the positive side, venue security had full view of my audio rig and didn’t say a word!
As it turned out, we had a nearly unobstructed view of the stage from about 100 feet back.
Being that we were on Wolf’s side, my main concern was that my Church Audio CA-14 cards would soak up tons of bass.
This was not the case. While there is a solid layer of bass in this recording, it is not at the expense of any of the other instruments.

Onto the show itself:

The Austin concert was a bit shorter than the previous gigs on the tour.
Chinatown was dropped from the setlist, which I understand considering the strain it puts on DLR.
Dave also dropped his pre-Ice Cream Man routine and went straight into the song. The highlight of this concert and what makes this show unique from all others is that the Austin gig occurred on what would have been the 100th birthday of the original EVH, the mother of Alex and Edward, Mrs. Eugenia Van Halen! Eddie mentioned this milestone during his guitar solo and played Happy Birthday in honor of his dearly departed mom. It was a very touching moment that made me truly appreciate the fact that my mother is alive and thriving!

A word about the Diamond One…

I understand that the 2015 tour was nearing its conclusion, and that David Lee is a 60 year old smoker.
However, at times it sounded like the late, great, Isabel Sanford, affectionately known as “Weezy Jefferson”, was fronting the Mighty Van Halen…

A simple solution for Dave’s vocal issues would be for Van Halen to install Steel Panther as their opening band for all tours going forward.
This would enable the world’s greatest DLR impersonator, Ralph Saenz A.K.A Michael Starr of Steel Panther, to emulate Diamond Dave’s classic vocal delivery from a backstage location, while modern day Dave does his tribute to vaudeville onstage.

The Van Halen family were on fire all night long. Never a dull moment with the “3 brothers”…

I’d like to thank guitard for encouraging me to use my non-stealthy, easy to spot, Church Audio CA-14 Cardoid mics at the Van Halen show!
I’m still new to taping and this was my first time to use the CA-14 cards at a nationally touring show. I was very pleased with the results.
It was very easy to sneak my rig into the Austin 360 Amphitheater and monitor the decibel levels during the gig.
The CA-14 cards will be my “go-to” mics from now on.

There is a healthy dose of crowd noise during the show.
However, this shouldn’t detract from your enjoyment of the recording.
It IS a Van Halen show after all!

This is the best recording of a nationally touring band that I have produced up to this point.

The 16/44 version of the Austin show was mastered by LIMULUS as a favor to me.
I hope to have an alternate 24/96 mastering of this recording to share in the near future.

I’d like to dedicate this recording to all of the Van Halen tapers and filmers around the world…
