Notes: I was on vacation in D.C. and got to meet super dimer loucap81 at this show. We have known each other for years, but never had the chance to meet…just sent cd-rs through the mail until the internet changed the recording/trading world. All CVH fans own Lou a debt of gratitude. Not only has he recorded many of the reunion shows, but found many upgrades to 1974-1984 VH shows as well as a few uncirculated shows from that era. It was great meeting him, a prince of a guy. All hail Lou!
There are already two sources of this show, so here is a third for you completists. This is likely the worst of the three, yet will allow you to hear the show from a different set of “ears.” I recorded from the second row in the upper level on Eddie’s side. The first two songs were recorded very hot and border on distort, but sort of a nice intense effect. I brought things down starting with the third tune so the sound evens out a bit from that point on.
Some observations on the show…Nice to get “The Full Bug” at this show, though too bad Roth doesn’t do the harmonica part here. I’m one of the few people who likes “Tattoo” as a song, though Eddie goofs on part of the song. Oops! On “Chinatown” Roth abandons the lyrics right before Eddie solo, as tho he cant keep up. Roth sounds terrible on “Blood and Fire” although I’m glad they trotted it out. The end of these shows always seem the strongest and most exciting as no one is quite what they will play. “Women In Love” sounds so great night after night and did again on this evening and then we got the nice surprise of “Hang ‘Em High” a nice deep cut for us die-hards. “Beautiful Girls” sounded nice as well.
Overall a great night, though Roth is a bit of mystery on this tour. He went from cool (1974-1984) to solid/odd (2007/08) but now seems just a bit strange and you get the sense he doesn’t know what will come out of his mouth vocally. But hey, rock and roll was never meant to be pitch perfect and great to see VH still out there 38 years after they started.

Anyone have this one they could offer in trade? I seemed to have missed it. Thanks.

If he doesn’t have it I do. I’m not sure how much room I have in dropbox, but maybe I can upload it.

Notes:
This is a nice recording, right there with Reading and perhaps marginally better. I got a great taping location 7 rows up from the floor on Wolf’s side with no one in front of me and no one to my left. And the people to my right were sitting down and quiet. I would have liked the guitar to be better defined in the mix (not sure if this is a result of the actual mix or the limitations of my recording equipment), but the bass and bass drum are punchy and well-defined.

I wasn’t going to go to this show originally, but when I got word from one “Markum7″ that he was vacationing in DC this week (conveniently when VH was in town) I had to meet him. You can thank him for liberating countless classic Van Halen recordings back in the day and keeping them preserved for future generations like me. If not for him, and his passion for VH and taping in general, I doubt I’d be into taping. It was great meeting you Mark! And he also taped this show so when he gets back home, look for his recording to pop up here.

I was disappointed that again, “Hear About It Later” was dropped in favor of “Jamie’s Cryin’.” However, I was happy to hear “Hang ‘em High” and thankfully this time, Roth was pretty good with the lyrics. There was no looking at the drum kit and it sounded like he had practiced it over the last couple weeks.

There will not be a 16 bit version. I don’t have the interest in doing that so any one of you can take it upon yourselves to do that and upload it to Dime, no need to ask me. Really you can do whatever you want with it without asking–mate it to a DVD, upload as mp3 files on guitars101.com, etc. I can’t stop you anyway and I stopped caring about such things a long time ago.

FFP file and shntool results included.

Thanks MC, but I was looking for the “Markum7″ recording. Matt hooked me up.

On a different note, was there any artwork for the “Markum7″ recording of this show? Thanks.
