I string mine backwards, so the ball of the string is in the tuner. I cut them anyway, otherwise you end up winding a lot of string. It also helps avoiding cuts. I too have cut a finger with a sharp string.

Same… I’ve been doing that for 20 years. Nothing worse than getting stabbed by the strings ends….
It’s also the only reason I hate getting my guitars serviced. They never string them up like I ask them….
