Three Days Grace Ties Van Halen for Most No. 1s on Mainstream Rock Songs Chart
3/28/2018 by Kevin Rutherford

“The Mountain,” the lead single from Three Days Grace’s new album ‘Outsider,’ grants the band a share of history.

Van Halen’s record of 13 No. 1s on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart, which has stood for over two decades, has finally been equaled.

Three Days Grace notches its Van Halen-tying 13th leader on the list, as “The Mountain” rises 3-1 on the chart dated March 31. The track, from the band’s new album Outsider, is the Canadian four-piece’s first No. 1 since “I Am Machine” in 2015. The act first led with “Just Like You” in 2004.

Van Halen earned its 13th No. 1 with “Without You” in 1998. It first reigned with its remake of Roy Orbison’s “(Oh) Pretty Woman” in 1982. (The chart launched in the Billboard issue dated March 21, 1981.)

Here’s an updated look at the acts with the most Mainstream Rock Songs No. 1s:

13, Three Days Grace
13, Van Halen
11, Shinedown
10, Tom Petty/the Heartbreakers
9, Aerosmith
9, Metallica
8, Foo Fighters
8, Linkin Park
8, Nickelback

Notably, third-place act Shinedown is closing in on its 12th Mainstream Rock Songs No. 1, as “Devil” pushes 9-8 as the Greatest Gainer on the latest list.

Three Days Grace notched 10 of its 13 No. 1s with original frontman Adam Gontier on lead vocals, from “Just Like You” to 2013′s “Misery Loves My Company.” The band’s latest three leaders feature lead vocalist Matt Walst (who made an additional trip to No. 1 via his other group, My Darkest Days, whose “Porn Star Dancing” led in 2010).

Since leaving Three Days Grace, Gontier has formed a new band, Saint Asonia, which has scored two Mainstream Rock Songs top 10s, in 2015 and 2016.

On the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, “Mountain” climbs to a new peak, rising 18-17 with 4.4 million audience impressions (up 13 percent), according to Nielsen Music.

The RCA Records-released Outsider, Three Days Grace’s sixth studio album (and second with Walst as frontman), debuted at No. 3 on the Hard Rock Albums chart dated March 24 with 17,000 equivalent album units in its first week.

I guess I’m out of it too. I’ve never heard of Three Days Grace and I only know 1 Shinedown song.

I’ve heard of the other guys, though!
