I know Journey isn’t regarded very highly by most Van Halen fans, but they are in town this week and we don’t get a lot of live music, so…

Apology #1: I went to see Journey last night and thought they were great. I knew every song but 2, it was a sold out crowd, great atmosphere, good 2 hour and 2 minute show.
Apology #2: Their drummer, Mike Smith, did the obligatory drum solo and he blew Alex Van Halen’s drum solo out of the water. That fella can drum – it was so solid and uptempo and clean! On the flip side, Neal Schon did a couple of guitar solos that were more atmospheric than rockin’. The guy can play, but it’s very different from EVH and not nearly as enjoyable.
Apology #3: I got caught up on the moment and sang Faithfully and Don’t Stop Believing at the top of my lungs along with everyone else. For this I have no excuse and I am truly sorry.

They play again tonight and Sunday. If tickets go for cheap on Sunday I might go back. Shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone.

I think the drummer’s name is actually Steve Smith. He is also a very well regarded jazz drummer, and played in other bands outside of Journey for many years until recently rejoining the band. Journey was basically just another nostalgia act, but then they found that new lead singer from the Philippines who sings just like Steve Perry could in his prime – and were reborn overnight.

Oops, yeah Randy, it is Steve Smith. I knew it was nearly the most boring name possible! Anyway, I looked him up and he is pretty highly regarded. Plus, he’s been in Journey for 3 different stints, dating back to the early 70′s.

Forgot to mention Arnel, the singer. He’s something of a legend here in Hawaii because there are so many Filipinos here. I guess that’s why they can play 3 dates here?! He’s very young and animated compared to the rest of the band and sounds great. Not exactly like Steve Perry, but as close as you can get.

Steve is one of those top drummers of all time. Very well regarded in the jazz world. Different kind of drumming though… Alex is one of those top rock drummers. I love them both!

I have always liked Journey…

Neal Schon is what first drew me to the band, always thought he played great. For me, if a band had a great guitar player I always took notice.

It doesn’t hurt that the band also has a large catalog of great songs.

The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!!

I saw them a few years ago – that singer is incredible. There’s no shame in a good fun show.

Resident dickhead. I will hurt your delicate feelings.

My brother is a drummer and he has said since the early 80s … Steve Smith is one of the best, if not the best, drummers alive. The dude is awesome.

Thanks for the support, guys. I know a lot of dudes think of Journey as a wimpy ballad band (which I guess they are about 1/3 of the time!) but they can certainly rock as well. Neal Schon is able to add a lot of “meat” to pop songs with his playing.

Go check ‘em out if they’re in your town! The drum solo alone is almost worth it.

No worries, I’ve had a good time seeing Journey the couple times I have. Never saw them with Perry but saw them with Augeri and Arnell and enjoyed both.
