Yet another forgotten or missed nugget of info from the Rockline interviews. This one from January 13, 1992. A caller asks about two unreleased tracks, “The Wish”, “You Never Know” and “Out of the Ether” at the 12:08 mark. Anyone ever dig up anything on these tracks? Are they listed in the VHE? I don’t have my copy here with me at work and it’s not available online anymore to check it out.

“You Never Know” (1990-91)
“The Wish” (1990-1991)
“Out of the Ether” (1990-1991)

The first two of these unheard outtakes from 1991′s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge featured “She Blinded Me With Science” hit maker Thomas Dolby assisting on keyboards. In return, Eddie Van Halen appeared on two songs from Dolby’s 1992 album Astronauts & Heretics. It was eventually decided that “You Never Know” and “The Wish” didn’t fit in with the back-to-basics approach of the rest of the Van Halen album. “Out of the Ether” was reportedly also considered for inclusion on the band’s next album, Balance, with the working title of “Hendrix Jam”

[From the VHE]

The Wish
This unreleased original is a leftover, keyboard-centric song from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge sessions. It was kept off of the album because Eddie felt it wouldn’t have fit in the grand scheme of the album (similar to the reason Angel Eyes was not included on Van Halen II). Thomas Dolby lent a hand on this song, sequencing the notes using Opcode Vision software.

You Never Know
This unreleased original song is a leftover keyboard-centric song from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge sessions. Like The Wish, Thomas Dolby lent a hand on this song.

Out of the Ether
This unreleased original song is a leftover song from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge sessions. It was later planned for Balance, with a working title of “Hendrix Jam,” but was not used.

Nice. Thanks, Higgy. My old brain is dumping information too fast to keep up.

These would be very cool to hear.
I have a Australian radio interview with Ed after the F.U.C.K. album was released he said there was 4 keyboard songs that Thomas Dolby helped him with that didn’t make the album.

EDDIE’S fingers aren’t fingers they are muscle-powered pistons that hammer guitar strings to the fretboard with the force of a rivet gun”.

Yeah, he didn’t mention Dolby in this interview, but he mentioned the third song was called, “Ether” and he couldn’t remember the name of the fourth one.

I believe they talk about these songs in an old Guitar World or some magazine from around the release of F.U.C.K. I remember reading from back then. I’m sure we would all be beyond thrilled to hear these songs released some day, The Wayback machine looks to be down right now, but their old website has a section with album leftovers song titles with those songs listed. It makes me think they are finished, album ready, quality songs that would be amazing to hear. I always wondered if Sammy’s song “Returning of the Wish” from his Red Voodoo album is a version of the that song.
