Ronnie Montrose ~ 1947-2012

A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose’s 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech, and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn’t take any of our love for granted.

He passed today. He’d battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we’re glad to have shared with him while we could.

He committed suicide maybe Sammy does not just wana comment on facebook or twitter.I had a friend who did the same thing last year it’s not an easy thing for some people to deal with or something everybody wants to post about on there facebook.Maybe he wants to make a statement in person or find out more before he talks or he is waiting to speak at the funeral because thats what the family wants.Or who knows what terms they were on so he is waiting to comment so he does not say the wrong thing and upset his family.

A very sad day in the rock world…

I saw Ronnie 14 years ago at a place called Palookaville somewhere in northern California. It was one of those deals where I was only in town for a couple of days on business and the day before I left, I noticed in a local entertainment newspaper that Ronnie was playing that night. I was with a couple of Korean co-workers – neither of whom had ever heard of Ronnie Montrose, and they weren’t particularly interested in rock music. I told them Ronnie was the shit and they’d love it. I had a nice beer buzz going and really enjoyed myself. They were a little baffled by the way I acted – but I didn’t give a shit.

I found Ronnie’s website a few days later and wrote him a fairly long email. I’ve included part of my email and Ronnie’s response.

Randy! I read your kind note, and it’s letters like yours
that keep me centered and confident I’m gettin’ through to folks! I’m
mixing two projects now, and am extremely busy… will add you to my
email list and let you know when my site is up and running…

thanks again for bringing your buddies!

take care,

Ronnie

>the pick that you had actually been playing with to the point the name
>was worn off.

From Sammy’s website and on Facebook:

Ronnie Montrose gave me my first break as a songwriter, as a front man, as a recording artist, as a touring artist, and for that I will always be grateful.

I was looking forward to a reunion for my birthday bash in Cabo with Denny, Bill and Ronnie – one of the few bands from that era where all four original members were still able to do it. It’s a shame to lose Ronnie and I’m so sorry for his loved ones. Rest in peace.
