Does anyone happen to know what the first song (0:00-3:42) is?

It has an Into The Void type riff, but I can’t place it.

Songs:
1. 0:00 – 3:42 – ????
2. 3:43 – 6:59 – Raging River Of Fear (Captain Beyond)
3. 7:00 – 11:56 – Take Your Whiskey Home (VH)
4. 11:57 – 17:27 – Believe Me (VH)
5. 17:28 – 20:51 – Show Your Love (VH)

This is from the same show that Greg’s clip of RROF was from; they are identical. This tape seems to be untouched though, whereas Greg’s version didn’t have all of the tape warble. Also, I can’t remember what the posted song was, but this show is from the same time period that the 2011/2012 clip posted by jonsilence on YouTube was from. Both start with Dave saying, “Our business is whalin’.” It may even be the same show if Dave only said that once, which is questionable.

Anyway you slice it though, it is an astounding find for those of us who have been listening to and collecting this stuff forever. Listen to Ed’s wha and echo solo in the first song. Take Your Whiskey Home is like the Cherokee demo, and Mark Stone has a bass solo in Believe Me. But the early arrangement and different breakdown on Show Your Love (ITO) are the real revelation here. It’s just awesome to hear. Thank you to whoever is responsible for bringing it to us….

Also, anyone have a higher quality download than my 64kbps they’d be willing to share?

Anybody else notice the other bands on the flyer in the upper left corner? Could this be one of the gigs where the band first saw MA performing with Snake?

Ironically it’s called… I’m on fire! it’s by a prog rock band called Nektar.
Interesting there’s a bit of similarity in the way the singer sings I’m on fire, to VH’s own song?
Great to hear this stuff.

Nick, thank you for your response, but are you sure about this?

I couldn’t find “I’m On Fire” on any of the five albums Nektar released before 1975. Also, they sound like different songs to me. Finally, on the band’s Wikipedia page, it says that I’m On Fire was written in 1978 and released in 2020. I’m confused.

Just looked back at Greg’s outline of that time in VHR. This is THE gig that VH borrowed Snake’s PA b/c theirs blew up during soundcheck. It’s not clear if it was the first time the band saw MA; he says the first time he saw the band was 2 years earlier (without Roth). Either way, this gig got the ball rolling towards the CVH lineup coming together.

In addition, Greg also goes through the songs that VH performed in the set. He says the first song they played that night was a song written by Mark Stone called “I’m With The Wind.” It also seems clear from what Greg wrote that either a setlist exists, or more of the show (maybe the whole thing) exists on tape. We can hope….
