Would have been great to hear these songs…I wonder if any parts of the music were used on ADKOT. I know Gary used the title Left For Dead with Tribe Of Judah.

I’d definitely be curious to hear what they were working on, but if the leaked ‘That’s Why I Love Ya’ is any indication of where they were going – it wasn’t pretty. I do think VH III had some decent riffs and EVH was playing with some fire but he needed/needs direction/management to get anything worth while accomplished.

I kind of liked TWILY myself but the whole III album to me was just strange and I never could get my hands around it. Ed was definately experimenting with a new direction and I think that is cool as his playing was awesome at that time but just did not dig the music that much. FITH was cool and some decent riff I guess (I agree with you Vain) but I was glad to see that era come to an end. I mean look what we ended up with…. Roth back and thats great. However I absolutely would be interested to see what they had on the table too.

Hell I’d love to see some of the unrealeased stuff from all singers thats floating around. I really would love to see if Ed had any stuff he recorded using the Trans Trem by Steinberger. I always loved his riffs he came up with with that thing.

A guy at links has posted this.If he has the songs it would be great to hear them.

Gonna throw you guys a few bones….

The reason why “That’s why I love you” was pulled from VH3 and replaced with “Josephina” was because of the fact that the back track to that song was the one that Eddie would give out loosely to audition singers. Eddie didn’t feel comfortable releasing that song on the official record for that simple fact.

Close to half of Tribe of Judah’s record was the follow up to VH3. One of the songs off of Tribe Of Judah’s record, “Thanks for Nothing” was also actually re-worked again on the Best of Both Worlds Compilation which ended up being the Sammy Hagar penned track “Learning To See”.

Don’t believe me?

Play both songs side by side and you be the judge…

I actually have 8 completed songs off of the (would have been) follow up to VH3. The working title as some of you already know was considered to be called “Love Again” and I can honestly tell you it was night and day between VH3 and Love Again. The songs were harder, edgier and Gary sounded in fine form on that record. That is why he always says in every interview that he wishes they would have at least made one more record because I thiong the fans and world would have forgivien Gary after hearing Love again. Too bad….

Did that today and yeah, it’s definitely the same riff followed by an almost acoustic breakdown when the verses start. Never noticed it before, probably because that’s where the similarities end. Listening to the lyrics now of “Thanks For Nothing,” knowing there’s a VH riff behind it, I wonder if they’re directed at VH.

I’ve said this a zillion times, but I liked III and was looking forward to the follow up. It wasn’t going to hold up to the debut or Fair Warning, but it was nice to see/hear Eddie taking chances and breaking away from the usual VH formula. “One I Want”, “Dirty Water Dog”, Fire in the Hole”, “Ballot or the Bullet”, “Once” and “Josephina” were cool tunes, in my opinion. I think the production was lacking and some of the songs lost direction at times, but it was an experimental time for the band and I appreciated that. Plus there were great EVH moments on that CD. Just reading comments from Gary and hearing a lot of the stories about Ed’s erratic behavior at that time, I can understand why Gary would have wanted to step away from Van Halen after the less-that-stellar reception he received. Obviously the guy at the Links has a copy of these demos, so hopefully they will surface one day soon. Until then, I’m going to throw in the WACF outtakes. Haven’t listened to them in a long time. :)

There is a similarity to the riff, but I wouldn’t say they’re the same. Just my .02.

Agreed.. any chugging riff pretty much sounds the same… I wouldn’t be surprised if Gary had the song written and just wanted to keep the structure the same. I heard he also penned ‘Down for Lunch’ which was also repurposed on the ‘Best of’.

From links
http://www.vhnd.com/old/articles/010131-01.shtml

[begin excerpt]: During the recording sessions for the follow-up to VanHalen III, Edward and Co. apparently met with reps. from the Warner Bros. Label who said that (in a nutshell) the new music was great, but where’s the first single? WB personnel didn’t think that any of the new music had “HIT” written all over it. They were impressed but felt that they didn’t have a “Unit Shifter” or something that would translate into a CD single from the album. They didn’t want to repeat the “Without You” release from III (i.e., great radio song, but never released as a bona fide single). Van Halen met with WB a month or two later with some additional material (I think 3 more songs) and the WB reps said the same thing. “Where’s the single?” Gary was most distressed at this and felt that he couldn’t get VanHalen back to the selling level of Sammy or Dave, and this ultimately led to his resignation which did catch the rest of the band rather by surprise. The rest of VH still considered the follow up a “go”. I myself heard rough versions of “Say Uncle” and “Left For Dead” (which was a GREAT song, I’ll be very surprised if at least the guitar riff is not used in some shape or manner on the new album) and another song which had no lyrics at the time, and I’m not sure what track it eventually became. [end excerpt]

This from a guy at links…

I saw this somewhere a few years back. Maybe on the Extreme forums? I can’t remember. But the “Thanks for Nothing” and “Learning to See” things don’t match up:

VAN HALEN Love Again (2000)

1. LEFT FOR DEAD (Left for Dead)
2. RIVER WIDE (East of Paradise)
3. SAY UNCLE (Celibate)
4. YOU WEAR IT WELL (Ambiguous Headdress)
5. ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CLICHÉ (It’s About Time)
6. I WANT HER ANYWAY (Rise)
7. MORE THAN YESTERDAY (Learning to See)
8. FROM HERE, WHERE DO WE GO? (Thanks for Nothing)
9. LOVE DIVINE (Sublime)
10. I DON’T MISS YOU…MUCH (Need I Say More)

FYI, “Sublime” was the hidden track on TOJ’s sampler before their album came out. Wasn’t on the actual album though.

I’m still keeping hope alive that one day a proper box set will be released containing unreleased demos from the vault at 5150… Here’s an idea – release it in 2020, call it ‘Hindsight is 2020′… that’s gold right there.
