I know this was discussed awhile back – can anyone recommend a brand or model ?

When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?

I’ve used several LGs with success, the cheapest model going, like WH14NS40. They probably don’t make that exact one anymore, but I’ve used several different low-end models without problems, in an external enclosure, on Macs.

I too have a LG that I bought a couple of years ago, never had a problem with it, works great.

Mojo – I’ve got a used external blu-ray burner that I don’t use anymore. It’s yours for free – but you’ll owe my a beer the next time we go to the same show in GR.

mrmojohalen: I was looking as this one:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8x-external-usb-2-0-blu-ray-disc-double-layer-dvdrw-cd-rw-disc-rewriter-black/9243009.p?skuId=9243009&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=6dedb80f-f6a8-4d0a-b55f-377d942e73d0&ksprof_id=8&ksaffcode=pg201023&ksdevice=c

It says it uses 2 USB ports. Is this a common thing ?

I have a Pioneer BDR-XD04T which I’ve had a couple of years, no problems.
It also uses 2 USB ports.

The external drive that I have came with a chord that has two USB plugs on the end that you plug into the computer (officially known as a USB Y cable). My laptop only has three USB ports and I got tired of trying to figure out what to unplug and still try to make it all work, so I said fuck it one day and tried burning a disc with a USB cable with only a single plug on it. It worked just fine – so I never used the dual-plug cable again. My understanding is that the idea behind it is that it provides additional electricity to the external drive, but that it often gets enough power from just a single USB plug if the computer to which it’s plugged in can provide the required amount of power through just one plug.

I have always just used the one plug in with no problems.
