Thanks Ron, that’s about the first clear statement we got from a band member: Van Halen is finished. jorgeQuote |

King Edward (1950) | From the clips I saw from the opening night in Vegas he may get laughed off the stage at the KISS shows. If someone showed me those clips back in 1984 and said that was David Lee Roth in 2020 I would have said no way possible. At this point it is hard for me to watch him…..its hard for me to say that. Just one guys opinion. King EdwardQuote |

wjamflan (1113) | I love CVH. I’ve always thought that Dave’s part was entertaining – the lyrics, the attitude, the fun – in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. The best thing was it always felt like HE got it. As a 50 year old, I have to recognize that it is all sophomoric, but I still like listening to CVH. That brings me to this current tour. Dave’s band with Al Estrada, etc sounds great. The problem is really Dave. First show, second show – it doesn’t matter. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now: I don’t know why after 1988 he started trying to sing harmony lines that were out of his range. They are painful to listen to and ruin the CVH songs. For example, Dance The Night Away has been ruined for years by this approach. I’ve heard and read all kinds of descriptions of this problem, and I particularly like the one in the comments for this 2nd Vegas show – “higher notes” sounding “like a chicken being raped”. Whatever you want to call it, it’s awful. But the worst part is that it is UNNECESSARY. I actually thought he sounded this way on Can’t Get This Stuff No More in 1996 too. I was embarrassed by it then, but damn…. it has progressed to the point where he takes established songs from much earlier and applies that same approach. Why? The songs were fine the way they were. He was never a great singer, but he was cool. Singing above his range makes him look like he doesn’t get it, that he is taking himself much more seriously, and that he isn’t even remotely cool. Uggghhhh… I love CVH, but Dave has turned into the embarrassing uncle that he always could have been but I hoped that he wouldn’t. That’s my take. Sorry for the sour grapes. I do appreciate the post so I could check out the show. I just wish the results were different…. “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |

wjamflan (1113) | Ha. Since I broached the subject, I’ll comment on Ron’s videos. Clearly, neither is a VH superfan, but asscheek comments aside, they both make good points. The problem is, the normal explanations that they tried to make, alcohol, monitors, etc., while very valid points, just don’t apply because he has been doing this for years – show after show. Dave (to me) was always more of a talker/conversationalist with a boozy wheeze of a cool tone. He also had the ability to do some cool screams at times. In other words, he knew how to use his lower register to communicate and spiced it up at times with screams. Now, he seems intent on trying to hit higher notes a lot, and he just can’t do it. He does not have control. And continually trying to do it when it is clear that he can’t, makes him seem like he is clueless. Add in the hyper smiling and it’s creepy weird. For me, as a super fan of CVH, it’s just sad. I miss the days when he kept it simple and cool. Was he always perfect? Hell no. But it was a hell of a lot better than he’s been the last 20+ years. The tragic thing is that he could approximate his earlier self by just sticking to the lower register and screaming his “haaa-yaaas” or whatever once in a while. It’s like when Ed started using the sustainer all the time. Everyone knew that it just didn’t sound good (especially in 2004). Thankfully he stopped doing that. Is EVH all that he was in the 80′s.? Absolutely not. But at least he tries to make it sound good. Would I prefer that he use Marshall amps and not the bloated cocked wha Peavey/EVH amps? Yes. But we obviously can’t have everything. It would just be nice if Dave would open his ears and spare us from the cringeworthy and unnecessary attempts to sing in a higher register than he should. PS – I had to turn off the Jump video when that guy tried to explain what Dave was doing wrong, because he was no better. Painful… “This hamburger don’t need no helper.” – DLR 5/17/15 wjamflanQuote |
