Sammy Hagar Celebrates ’4 Decades of Rock’ in Concert with Help from Chickenfoot, Montrose and Whitesnake

Sammy Hagar took fans on a trip through his 40-year career last night (Sept. 1) during a special ’4 Decades of Rock’ concert in Lake Tahoe, Nev. The show featured appearances from members of all three of his famous bands — Montrose, Van Halen and Chickenfoot — as well as David Coverdale of Whitesnake.

The 22-song set opened with Hagar and his longtime backing band the Wabos performing solo hits such as ‘I Can’t Drive 55′ and ‘There’s Only One Way to Rock.’ Bassist Michael Anthony joined his friend next to help perform tracks from their time together in Van Halen, with ‘Good Enough’ making a somewhat surprise appearance alongside smashes like ‘Why Can’t This be Love?’ and ‘Best of Both Worlds.’

This was followed by a five-song Montrose set, with Chickenfoot guitarist Joe Satriani filling in for the recently deceased Ronnie Montrose alongside original band members Bill Church and Denny Carmassi. For an encore, Satriani, Hagar and Anthony teamed up to perform Chickenfoot songs, with Carmassi on drums. You can see the full setlist from this evening at the bottom of this page.

Back in May, when this show was announced, the “Red Rocker” said he hoped it would serve as the prototype for a similarly-themed full-fledged 2013 tour. Hagar wasn’t taking that future for granted last night. “If I only did this once in my lifetime I would be happy, this is a great night,” he enthused before introducing Coverdale for an encore performance of Led Zeppelin‘s ‘Rock and Roll.’

Hagar also took the occasion to briefly address his long career and upcoming birthday: “I forget about it, I’m out there just partying and working, having a good time, and next thing I know, I’m turning 65 (on Oct. 13). I’m cool with it, everybody’s always trying to lie about their age, f— that. I never dreamed I’d still be doing this, but now, I never dreamed about quitting!”
