Blu-rays Only

If I have a choice,I’ll go with blu-ray every time.

Blu-ray is the way to go.

The landscape at Dime has changed in the last 3-4 years as several people have acquired seed boxes which allows a small group of leechers to completely dominate (probably 80-90%) of the uploading for a torrent. Obviously, this has created an unlevel playing field; which is unfortunate because Dime has a share ratio requirement. I have suggested eliminating the share ratio requirement several times at Dime’s Yahoo mailing list, but it gets shot down in short order every time. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people out there with the mindset that “it isn’t fair if you don’t pay anything back.” I argue that ten years ago, it was essential that people pay back (in bandwidth) at least part of what they took – and if they didn’t – the site wouldn’t function smoothly. Because of the aforementioned seed boxes, however, that paradigm has shifted. In spite of the paradigm shift – people are still stuck in the old mindset. Essentially, my contention is that if Dime eliminated the share ration requirement – downloading operations would still run just fine. And in spite of all the people who would essentially only be giving back a tiny bit of what they took in bandwidth – you could still download whatever you wanted. Hopefully someday soon, the people who run Dime will see the light.

videoman320: People are with the times. The vast majority of people use their cable box for dvr recording. Stand alone recorders in homes are far and few between now. That is why blu ray hasn’t taken over and never will. I think blu ray is great but again guys like us who collect live concert bootlegs are a small part of the population and getting even smaller every year. Hardly any of my friends have blu ray players. I’ve shown them the difference in quality but most of them say its nice but don’t need it.

This discussion isn’t really relevant to stand alone recorders or DVR boxes – it’s about getting something from a concert filmer’s HD camera to a collector to enjoy. I know that not many people actually burn things anymore, so instead of saying blu-ray, I probably should have just said HD, because that’s what I was really getting at: embracing HD – and no longer down-converting it to standard definition (which is what I still do for all the HD videos that I author).

As far as people not wanting HD/blu-ray quality … I can only scratch my head. Because to me, the difference is like night and day. Step it up to 4K HD and it’s just that much better (I have a 4K video cam and I’m amazed at the quality).

mcs5150: You can rely on dropbox if you are a member here. What if CBG etc mandated that from now on blu-ray only and only uploaded to Dime? People’s ratio will be screwed very quickly.

CBG shot a couple thousand shows in the pre-HD era, so it’s only his more recent shows that can even be authored to blu-ray.

And just for the sake of discussion … if a guy shoots a show in HD and only authors it to blu-ray because that’s all he wants or needs for himself, and then freely offers that blu-ray at Dime, who are we to say he also owes us a standard definition DVD version?

There is a flip side to this – if you are only going to author a blu-ray version of a show – then don’t bitch when someone downloads the blu-ray and uses it to author a standard definition DVD (and guaranteed – that’s going to happen).

CBG also uploads all of his shows to The Traders Den – and they don’t have a share ratio requirement. So you can always count on that.

I assume you’re referring to the 2016 tour. I can’t really say I’m surprised – as almost everyone shooting video these days is shooting in HD – and it’s becoming pretty common to own an HD tv (can you even buy a new tv these days that isn’t HD?).
