kaloway (2021) | https://www.yahoo.com/music/eddie-van-halen-on-david-lee-roth-he-does-not-121933811641.html Iconic guitarist Eddie Van Halen is just weeks away from the start of his band’s North American tour; which means he’ll be playing 38 dates with his brother Alex, son Wolfgang, and his on-again, off-again frontman David Lee Roth – the latter of whom, as it turns out, is going to be a bit of a prickly one to share the road with. “He does not want to be my friend,” Van Halen told Billboard in an exclusive cover story, adding, “Roth’s perception of himself is different than who he is in reality. We’re not in our 20s anymore. We’re in our 60s. Act like you’re 60. I stopped coloring my hair, because I know I’m not going to be young again.” He continued with more stinging words about his bandmate: “It’s hard, because there are four people in this band, and three of us like rock ’n’ roll. And one of us likes dance music,” he says. “And that used to kind of work, but now Dave doesn’t want to come to the table.” The question remains, then – why does Van Halen voluntarily choose to work with someone he clearly does not get along with? As he explains, it’s all for the fans. “I think it’s now built into people’s DNA, that it just won’t be Van Halen if it’s not Roth’s voice,” he notes. “You make music for people. Otherwise, just play in your closet. And how do you reach the most people? By giving them the band that they know. To do it any other way would be selfish.” Lest Roth feel slighted by Van Halen’s comments, the guitarist also had disparaging words for his former bassist, Michael Anthony, who left the band in 2006 and is currently replaced by Van Halen’s son Wolfgang. “Every note Mike ever played, I had to show him how to play…Before we’d go on tour, he’d come over with a video camera and I’d have to show him how to play all the parts,” he says. He additionally remarked on Roth’s ‘80s replacement Sammy Hagar –who famously depicted Van Halen as an isolated, violent drunk in his 2011 autobiography – but kept his commentary curt. “That’s him painting a picture of something that never happened,” he says of Hagar’s narrative. Van Halen’s 2015 tour kicks off July 5 in Seattle. kalowayQuote |

thismusicsux (581) | yeah this was **the** story in that stupid article. Not that Ed doesn’t respect Mike. That was established long ago. thismusicsuxQuote |

jroundy (1418) | I find this a bit hard to believe…. I assumed it was tabloid bullshit. Are these facts correct? Why would Ed say these things just before a tour would begin? Why would he say these things at all? He’s sober. The story about Mike is mind blowing, if true. I would be interested in Mike’s response. The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!! jroundyQuote |

VOODOO (2375) | I have a feeling it might have been way back, when Ed was redoing Mike’s bass parts, he may have had to show Mike what he played on the album or something along those lines. It seems everyone is taking it like Ed is saying he had to sit with Mike for decades and teach him how to play bass. I think it more of an isolated instance here and there and I think he’s putting it into the perspective of sticking up for Wolfie. I’m sure he gets tired of interview after interview being asked about Mike and Sam and Dave, etc. It’s in the past, so leave it there. None of these “mainstream” magazines ever seem interested in the future and what the band has been doing since 2012. They all want to bring up the dirt, which is what gets them headlines. Ed was being frank and honest, no bullshit and it all gets blown out of proportion. No one flipped out when Dave was ragging “the Van Halens” about not writing new materian for ADKOT, saying everything on that album was 20+ years old and Eddie doesn’t want to do anything new. and how he wanted to write an entirely new album but the “Van Halens” didn’t want to. Eddie sees it differently. It’s no secret that Dave is totally into the electronic stuff. He’s openly admitted it and was over the moon about that stupid dubstep remix of Jump that came out. The Van Halens want to write rock music and Dave probably wants to take the band in an entirely different direction at that’s not working with everyone. VOODOOQuote |

I didn’t flip out because I believe Dave. Ed’s output hasn’t been noteworthy in about 20+ years. I don’t think Dave said anything we all don’t know or feel. It didn’t come off as insulting to me.. I see it more as he’s eager and has a work ethic. I can’t say the same about Ed. Resident dickhead. I will hurt your delicate feelings. VAiNQuote |

I wasn’t saying YOU flipped out. I meant more about how so many people are taking this to mean the band is going to break up. Dave is more of a politician. He knows how to deliver an insult and make it easily digestable. Ed doesn’t seem to care about sugar coating things or being PC about anything anymore. He’s been insulted by Dave and Sam so many times, I don’t see why he should feel intimidated to the point of censoring himself. I assume he feels betrayed by Mike and doesn’t feel the need to pull any punches with him either. VOODOOQuote |

jroundy (1418) | It seems this Yahoo article has been altered somewhat from the Billboard article…. no surprise. I read this one before I read the Billboard article. Yahoo has made it more dramatic… no surprise. Still… I think it was a big mistake to say what he said about Mike. The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. videoman320 (308) | I don’t think Ed gives a damn what Dave,Sammy or anyone else says or thinks. All he cares about is those with the last name Van Halen. I’m sure he realizes no one in that group will ever fill twenty thousand seats without him on guitar. New material, old material, Dave,Sammy doesn’t matter he IS the draw. I still say without Wolfie involved he would have never brought Van Halen out again. videoman320Quote |

ModelCitizen (333) | Semantics here but I’m sure Ed “showed” Mike what to play as Ed wrote the music. Not as in he taught Mike how to play the bass. …Zero Discipline ModelCitizenQuote |

I’m not sure what the rest said as it’s blurred out but when I was in a band and most other bands I knew, if the guitarist was writing a song and presented it to the band the other members would say ‘what or how would you like me to play’ You’d give them the core notes and an idea of the feel (or a style you’d heard from a record that had influenced you) and the song would grow from there. I also notice in the text that he said ‘he would add to what was given’ this just seems like a million and one other bands way of writing a song …simple as that, I can’t see what all the fuss is about.
