Was hoping for NO.1 for VH and Dave.

RT RT @MelodicRock: Numbers a little disappointing. And sadly Van Halen have still not had a #1 album with DLR. … http://bit.ly/AAkuMW

A Different Kind of Truth: Billboard charts & U.S. sales / “comeback” comparisons

——————————————————————————–

With first week sales of 188,000 (U.S.) in the midst of the music industry’s “piracy era,” Interscope must be very pleased that their reported “high risk/high reward” gamble on Van Halen has, thus far, paid off.

For comparison, here are some first week sales figures and Billboard chart positions for other major rock comeback albums in the piracy era, (i.e. the past 7 years is when the bottom fell out, essentially):

1. Van Halen, “A Different Kind of Truth:” 188,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1998 – 2012 (14 years)

2. Blink-182, “Neighborhoods:” 151,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2003 – 2011 (8 years)

3. The Rolling Stones, “A Bigger Bang:” 129,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #3
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1997 – 2005 (8 years)

4. Creed, “Full Circle:” 110,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2001 – 2009 (8 years)

5. The Who, “Endless Wire:” 81,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #7
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1982 – 2006 (24 years)

6. Stone Temple Pilots, “self-titled:” 62,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #2
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 2001 – 2010 (9 years)

7. The Cars, “Move Like This:” 36,000 (U.S.) Billboard debut: #7
YEARS INACTIVE (between studio releases): 1987 – 2011 (24 years)

I would say selling 188,000 is a success and not disappointing at all.

Poor Dave – denied a #1 yet again. Still, very impressive.

to be honest, number 2 or number 3, this is a killer record, so far one of the most impressive records since 1984…

it’s a kick ass record, …honestly, I really like it !

I don’t think it’ll hit #1, unfortunately. Adele won 6 Grammy awards, and that’s usually an indicator that an artist’s album will jump in sales. And since she’s sitting at #1, something like this will ensure she remains there for a while longer.

I gotta step on this one…ADKOT blows 1984 and Diver Down out of the water! It contains elements of the first four albums combined…and each song individually can be picked apart to find other VH classics within their walls! I don’t know if it’ll be a classic…but this is the best thing VH has put out since 1981…and even has a few elements of Eat ‘em and Skyscraper thrown in for good measure! And yes! DLR’s first two solo offerings were far superior to anything VH did with Sammy.

For a pure rock album to debut at #2 in today’s music landscape is nothing short of a miracle if you ask me….

Resident dickhead. I will hurt your delicate feelings.

This is the first album/cd in a very long time, from any artist that I can listen to the whole way without skipping any tracks. I love putting on my iPod and shuffling it. Minus the Downtown sessions, it is the exact time of my commute.
For about the last ten years or so, when something comes out, I usually only focus on a few tracks, Metallica’s Death Magnetic was somewhat of an exception, but even that I can’t listen to start to finish.
In my mind this is why ADKOT is a huge success, no songs I feel the need to skip, and each listen I get something new.
