Dave (2309) | To all the guitar players on this site, your help is appreciated……………… My son has started taking guitar lessons, so my wife and I want to buy him an acoustic guitar for Christmas. Does anyone have any recommendations for a first time acoustic guitar that’s reasonably priced? Also, I’ve been told that a dreadnought guitar will be too big for him. But that seems to be all I can find. Any opinions on that? Thanks in advance for all your help! ~Dave Stay Frosty DaveQuote |

sickman (2380) | Ibanez has a nice acoustic electric. I bought one for my son a few years ago and it has been great. It’s an Ibanez AEG10E. Got it at Guitar Center for $270. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-AEG10E-Cutaway-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar-102960127-i1150882.gc sickmanQuote |

ffoner (1089) | Absolutely love my Martin. If you think your son is gonna stick with guitar for the long haul, get him a Martin. My .02 ffonerQuote |

Gilligan (1518) | How old is your son? I’d buy inexpensive first and then upgrade if he really takes to it. I got my 11 yr old daughter a cheapo Gibson Maestro ($60 at Best Buy – includes gig bag & instructional CD!) for Christmas last year and we’ve had no problems with it. I’m glad we didn’t pay more, though, because she doesn’t play it much outside of her lessons and occasional noodling. GilliganQuote |

jroundy (1418) | I would buy something inexpensive, but not cheap. If you go cheap, and the instrument cannot be played properly, you’re just wasting money, and time. No reason to spend a lot of money if your kid loses interest. You can always upgrade later if your son really gets into it. Take the EVH approach. Look at what he started on. The poor folks play for keeps down here…They’re the living dead. Nobody rules these streets at night like Van Halen!! jroundyQuote |

videoman320 (308) | I would take him to a guitar shop and see what he can handle in size. Especially the neck. You don’t want to buy a guitar that he can’t get his hand around comfortably it may cause him to struggle and lose interest. videoman320Quote |
