Australian rock elders AC/DC have postponed remaining dates on their US tour after lead singer Brian Johnson was warned he risked total deafness.

The 68-year-old “has been advised by doctors to stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss,” the band said in a statement.

AC/DC, famous for playing at high decibels, said it would play the 10 remaining US shows at later dates but “likely with a guest vocalist”.

The delayed shows include a concert in Atlanta on Tuesday (local time) as well as an April 4 show at Madison Square Garden in New York.

It remained unclear whether the band would be able to pursue the European leg of their Rock or Bust tour, which is scheduled to begin on May 7 in Lisbon.

The tour had been due to end with a concert on June 12 at a 46,000-capacity park in Aarhus, Denmark.

The rockers had added the additional dates after a busy 2015, which included a headliner appearance at Coachella in California — one of the world’s leading festivals.

Johnson’s vocal problems are just the latest of the band’s woes.

AC/DC’s latest album Rock or Bust, released in 2014 after a six-year gap, is the first without founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, who has retired due to dementia.

Young’s brother Angus remains the lead guitarist and is known, even at age 60, for sporting his signature schoolboy outfit.

The band has also parted ways with drummer Phil Rudd, who was convicted in New Zealand of threatening to kill an employee.

AC/DC has sold more than 200 million albums since 1973 with Back in Black among music history’s top sellers.

Johnson, known for his trademark cap and a voice that strains the vocal cords, joined the band in 1980 after singer Bon Scott died following a night of heavy drinking.

I think it is all over for sure. I had tickets for 2 dates in Europe but I think they will cancel.

Well I think the best replacement for Brian is Joel from Airbourne.

They need t call it quits…. So far, this tour they have replaced Malcolm, Phil & now Brian….

WTF Angus… He cant be hurting for money that much can he???

I’m not a fan at all, but I’d be pretty disgusted if the tour continues.

A guest vocalist to fulfill the remaining dates and say goodbye is fine. Anything after that not so much.

I grew up listening to Bon Scott-era AC/DC and to be perfectly honest, I never really warmed up to the Brian Johnston version of the band. I still went to see them a few times though, but mostly because of Angus. What I’d like to see is one last tour with a Bon Scott style vocalist playing the old catalog from Bon’s era. The problem with that is that Bon wasn’t just a vocalist – he had a unique stage presence. Copying vocals (and pulling it off) is one thing – copying a guy’s unique stage presence (and pulling it off) is an entirely different thing. But that’s what I’d wish for.

The guy from Texas’s Back In Black does Bon AND Brian really well. Sounds like both of them and copy’s the stage presence pretty good too.

Seems like Angus still has the fire, so I think he should do albums like Slash – either with several guest vocalists or just one new guy. “Angus” is a cool band name…

Isn’t Brian Johnson using in ear monitors?

How could he be at risk of hearing loss? Can’t you simply adjust the volume level?

Seems really odd to me.

Brian Johnson

“I’ve obviously had some hearing loss,” Johnson told Stern. “I’ve got hearing loss in me left ear. I didn’t get it from music. I got it from sitting in a race car too long without ear plugs. I heard my ear drum burst, because I forgot to put me plugs in under my helmet. That’s how it happened. Music had nothing to do with it.”

I love Bon……I really Really like Brian. I don’t want anyone else. I never thought I would say this but its time to hang it up. One of the greatest rock bands of all times, don’t taint the legacy. It would be similar to a great sports star hanging on to long a year or two after they should have retired.

Just my opinion.

For all intents and purposes, Journey was in the same boat and they’ve done a masterful job of pulling off replacing the lead vocalist most closely associated with their signature sound (Steve Perry) with a copycat – several years after that lead vocalist actually left the band, thereby resurrecting a classic version of the band that most fans find acceptable.
