Q: Hello, Were you able to test any of the tapes to see if there is any content on them? I understand it would take too long to test them all, but I’m just curious if you know if there is any content at all on these? I would love to bid but just concerned they could all be blank? Also, would you allow a courier pick-up instead of sending via USPS, like DHL or UPS? Thanks JP Jan-06-15
A: Hi JP, I took the tapes to a friends house to use his DAT machine and I am able to confirm that there is indeed music on these tapes and that they aren’t blank. I just sampled the tapes. I didn’t listen to them all the way through and make detailed notes. So yes, you will hear rare Van Halen, Satriani, etc and not silence. Courier pickup would be fine.

Yeah it would be exciting to pop em in. But a couple have specific dates. I was assuming live shows, but some just song titles, maybe studio jams.
I’d assume some of the stuff that went into making RHRN. Maybe the re-recorded sessions? Hmm
Opening bid $500

Now we can only hope Pete Angelus or another VH associate has a similar stash in storage. Ha

Given the dates of the VH stuff I would bet they are mixes from that day’s work on the live album. Some of those songs on the live album weren’t actually recorded “live” and the ones that were were heavily doctored….

Right thinking they are the doctored re-recorded sessions. Maybe not all that interesting if they are nearly final mixes used for the album.

I would say do not touch with a 10 foot pole. It is not confirmed what is on the tapes as no details are available, but it is confirmed there is music on them.
For any transaction, the details should be complete.

Not attacking you, but that’s what people said when I bought the 5150 Demos and the “Zero” demos and they were both 100% authentic. If anyone does buy these, pay via PayPal and your purchase is 100% guaranteed if they turn out to be blank or fraudulent. Check out the seller’s feedback and if they don’t accept PayPal, then yes, don’t risk it. I think this could be a cool little goldmine of unreleased takes and tracks. Anyone who is a Satch fan would also be in heaven!

Something seems odd like the W in Wig does not match up with the W in Wyman maybe its just different people labeling but I would think Andy would have all the same writing on all his tapes again what do I know

I work for a small video production company and when we shoot and archive, there are four of us who work together and we all write on back ups to identify the media. I would assume there would be more than one person involved in these sessions who could write on a label.

DAT tapes have an archival life of 20 to 30 years..Ampex are the worst for long life and I see several ampex tapes in that stack.Ampex tapes will shed….I used dat from 1990 to 2002 and Ive used every brand..some are notoriously bad and..anything that has the tape hanging out I would never put in one of my machines…
might keep that in mind before you commit to buying ..
